R&R....No, I'm not talking rest and relaxation, (although you may need that, too), I'm talking rituals and routines:) For little ones, so much of the world is beyond their control and so many things come by surprise. Familiar rituals and routines provide security to balance the unpredictability of life.
There is great comfort in well established rituals and routines- particularly for your little one. Rituals and routines that can be counted on to come at the same time or in a predictable order help your baby learn how to order time, develops confidence in your baby’s ability to predict what comes next, and assures your baby that he or she is taken care of and loved.
As you go about your daily life, you create and recreate routines and rituals. This may be done intentionally or without really thinking about it. For your baby the rituals associated with waking up, meals, naps, bathtime, and bedtime provide a sense of calm and confidence.
Consider the daily routines in your life that relate to caring for your baby and choose one of your routines to focus special attention on- to make it into a ritual. Perhaps you will pay special attention to specific sensory inputs~ sound, smell, taste, or touch. Or, maybe you will animate the experience with a special song. Do you have a favourite bathtime or bedtime song?
In each Nurture Natal Baby & Me Yoga class we have well established rituals and routines. For example, the ritual of beginning and ending class the same way each week is an important element of our class structure. From our hello song to our good bye song, we build a safe and loving community through shared rituals and routines.
From my heart to yours,
